Why do republicans oppose the "Individual Mandate" in the new health care law?

@ AE: to equate this with auto insurance is ludicrous. i can live without having a car (as many urbanites do), but to make it mandatory for everyone to pay for insurance or pay a fine is, in effect, a tax. go ahead, try to opt out without a special waiver from the administration. see where that gets ya...
